A group of 14 civil engineering students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (RUM) won first place overall at the Canadian National Steel Bridge Competitions (CNSBC), held at Western Ontario University in Canada. They took first in lightness, construction economy, cost estimation, construction speed and circular engineering, and third in aesthetics.

The challenge involved designing, building and assembling a 1:10-scale all-steel bridge; 13 universities from the United States, Japan, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico competed, with the University of British Columbia and Université de Sherbrooke taking second and third. Team captain Joseph E. González Ortiz credited the result to long hours of preparation since June, while INCI professor and mentor Dr. José O. Guevara praised the students’ efficiency and dedication. The team had also placed third at the regional ASCE competitions, qualifying for the U.S. national finals for a ninth consecutive year.
