F&R drives a recreational initiative for Build Up courses with a trip to the Children’s Museum in Carolina

On April 6, 2016, the members of the Build Up program, together with Engineer Luis Borges, EIT, of F&R Construction Group, Inc., took a trip to the Children’s Museum (Museo del Niño) in Carolina as a form of educational integration for the program. The Build Up program, promoted by the Associated General Contractors of America, Puerto Rico Chapter (AGCPR), focuses on combining construction topics with the subjects children are currently studying in class. The first round of courses took place at the Emilio del Toro Cuevas School in the Las Gladiolas community in Hato Rey. These specialized classes are offered weekly to 5th-grade boys and girls every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., up until the Children’s Museum trip, where the Build Up classes concluded. Engineer Luis Borges, EIT, together with the children’s teacher, Dora I. Rodríguez, organized and supervised the children’s visit to the museum.

During the museum visit, the children had the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of different subjects, as well as enjoy recreational areas such as a (model) airplane donated by American Airlines for the museum’s educational use. Throughout the day the children enjoyed the facilities and were given a complete tour of the museum, where they interacted with various educational themes and learned about topics they had not yet covered in their classes. Where the children thrived most, however, was in the construction recreation area that is part of the museum’s platform. While playing with the construction materials, the children were amazed by everything Engineer Borges explained and recognized some of the materials used in the Build Up classes. It was a rewarding experience for both the children and Engineer Borges, as it showed the fruit of his work in the weekly classes.

This effort by the Associated General Contractors of America, Puerto Rico Chapter, and F&R Construction Group, Inc. has succeeded in providing education and a positive dynamic to young people through the Build Up classes — awakening students’ interest in the different branches of construction and shaping the future of Puerto Rico.
