Backed by a $226 million private investment in construction and remodeling, El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo began a phased reopening, welcoming guests starting May 21 with 230 of its 750 rooms — all ocean-view, in the Las Brisas section — along with pools, the Coquí Water Park and five restaurants, general manager Robert Holsten and sales and marketing director Luis Méndez reported. The plan was to reopen the full property during the first quarter of 2022; when complete it was projected to generate around 2,000 direct and 1,900 indirect jobs (130 employees at the time).

Fajardo Mayor José Aníbal Meléndez called the reopening vital, noting the hotel had been the town’s largest employer with around 1,000 jobs. While Las Brisas operated, construction by local firm F&R Construction continued in the La Marina and Las Olas sections. The renovated front desk featured multiple personalized stations in white, gray and blue tones; new transparent-sided funiculars connected the three sections; and the marina was open with boats to Palomino Island, which would reopen later in the summer. The hotel reopened as an independent property — having previously flown Wyndham and Waldorf Astoria (Hilton) flags — with a possible future franchise; in 2019 it passed to Royal Blue Hospitality (part of F&R Construction) after Blackstone’s ownership ended.
