With a phased reopening, the resort is preparing for what it forecasts will be its best high season.

The emblematic El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, opened in the 1960s on a 390-acre site atop the Punta Gorda cliff in Las Croabas, hosted celebrations, conventions and golf tournaments for more than five decades. After Hurricane María in 2017 and a period of abandonment and closure, the island’s largest hotel was acquired in 2019 by local firm Royal Blue Hospitality, LLC, which entrusted the reconstruction to F&R Construction Group, Inc., the Fullana family’s company.

President Ángel Antonio “Toño” Fullana Olivencia explained that F&R invested in the iconic property because, as builders, they understood its restoration cost and had the in-house expertise to lead design, management and compliance. He noted the hotel suffered more from post-storm abandonment than from María itself, and that the biggest challenge was financing — worsened when a Banco Santander loan fell through at the start of the pandemic, prompting phased reconstruction funded by their own capital and incremental financing, targeting completion between December 2022 and summer 2023.

By this stage about 230 rooms in the Las Brisas section had opened, with plans to reach 374 by December and an eventual goal of 750-900 units. The Coquí Water Park, marina and golf course were operating, with Palomino Island and the marina restaurant to follow, according to Arch. Vanessa de Mari, president of F&R Management Services, LLC, which manages construction of the project.
